European Bronze Medal Winner 2017

European Bronze Medal Winner 2017

This year’s Veterans’ European Individual Championships were held in Chiavari, Italy from 18-21 May. As usual, Portsmouth & Southsea clubmates (and husband and wife) Carl and Jenny Morris were representing Great Britain, Carl in the Sabre and Jenny in all three weapons.

Jenny and Carl had a disappointing start to the Championships as Carl (along with all the other Brits) was knocked out in the last 16 of the Men’s Sabre (60-69) and Jenny only made the last 32 of the Women’s Epee (60-69).

However, Jenny’s day was to come in the Women’s Sabre (60-69) on the Saturday. She got off to a shaky start in the poules – only winning two fights – and went up to the direct elimination as 15th seed. Her first DE saw her easily dispatch her Hungarian opponent 10-1. Her next match, in the last 16, was tougher, but she went on to beat Italian fencer Gardini 10-8. In the next DE Jenny was up against Sue Benney, a very experienced British fencer from the southwest, but Sue proved no match for Jenny who won with a relatively comfortable 10-5. In the final four Jenny was assured of a medal, but which colour? She came up against another Italian, Claudia Bandieri, who proved too tough an opponent to beat on her home turf, leaving Jenny with a very well-deserved bronze medal. Bandieri went on to lose in the final to Britain’s Jane Hutchison who took the title.

On the Sunday, Jenny looked poised to match her incredible performance as she won all her poule matches in the Foil and went into the direct elimination seeded fourth. She easily made her way into the last 8, but fifth seed German fencer Karin Jansen knocked her out, leaving Jenny without a medal in the Foil this year.

Portsmouth & Southsea FC is incredibly proud to have two international fencers at the club and we can’t wait to see the medal next Monday!
