About

The Portsmouth & Southsea Fencing Club was set up by the Navy in the early 1950s and was open to all, with tuition given in all three weapons by Naval and Royal Marine coaches.  It soon gained the reputation of being a friendly club.
A founder member of the Club, and later Chairman, was Dr. Joan O’Connell.  Fencers of that time would remember her as the genial Irish doctor who organised the Portsmouth Open Foil Tournament for many years.
The Club has evolved over the years with the changing face of the population and that of the role of the Navy, but contact has been maintained with them and local clubs.  The concept has always remained the same: that of a friendly club, open to all, from beginner to experienced fencer.
